Thermoplastic foam injection molding

Dimensional accuracy of complex physically foamed injection molded parts

The aim of the research project is to investigate the dimensional accuracy of complex physically foamed injection molded parts. Computed tomography (CT) is used as the measuring method. A major advantage of CT is that, in addition to external contours, internal areas of the molded part are also recorded. This makes it possible to evaluate the dimensional accuracy and the foam structure obtained.

With the aid of contour comparisons between a developed benchmark part and the CAD data set (nominal geometry), the influence of injection molding conditions on dimensional stability is evaluated. The project results are intended to show users of physical thermoplastic foam injection molding under which conditions dimensionally accurate complex foam injection molded parts can be produced.
